The Walden vs. Seppala Challenge Race at Poland Spring
Arthur Treadwell Walden, founder of the New England Sled Dog Club, Klondike Gold Rush participant, and well-known New England dog driver, was enjoying a successful run of publicity in New England in the late 1920s. His team of big, yellow mixed-breed sons of his famous leader The Great Chinook had done well on the local sleddog racing circuit, winning the Poland Spring race in 1926, and attracting great local interest in his dogs. The Reindeer Herding Laika of the Nenets people is said to be the origin of the Samoyed breed now found in western countries. The Yakutian Laika, whose status is still under discussion, is said to derive from sleddogs from what is now the Republic of Sakha in eastern Siberia mixed with Nenets stock. An effort is under way to preserve landrace sleddogs of the Amur River region. Also the Chukotka Draught Dog and the Kamchatka Sled Dog should probably also be considered a part of the Laika group.
External Links:
HuntingLaikaBreedsofRussia - Vladimir Beregovoy's website

Pirena Stage Race
The Pirena Dog Sled Race is a multi-day stage race, held in the Pyrennean mountains late in January each year. The majority of the race is run in Spain but it includes stages in both France and Andorra. First held in 1991, it is Europe's major mid-distance stage race and attracts a wide international entry. The winner of the first Pirena race was René Minartz, a Dutchman, who repeated his victory in 1993. Over the past 19 years, winners have come from Holland, France, USA, Canada, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Spain. Elizabeth Edland of Norway was the first lady to win the Pirena in 2001.
(This page is a stub!
