Vladimir Germanovitch Bogoraz

Vladimir G. Bogoraz (1865 - 1936, also known as Vladimir Tan, Bogoraz-Tan, or Tan-Bogoraz) was a Russian anthropologist, author and revolutionary. Exiled under the Czar to North-Eastern Siberia, where he studied the Chukchi, he collaborated with Franz Boas during the Jesup Expedition to the Bering Straits region. He founded the Institute of the Northern Peoples in Leningrad, which did important applied anthropological work, particularly in documenting indigenous Siberian languages and creating and teaching written languages for them. The Institute was closed by Stalin after Bogoraz's death.
