Pirena Stage Race

The Pirena Dog Sled Race is a multi-day stage race, held in the Pyrennean mountains late in January each year. The majority of the race is run in Spain but it includes stages in both France and Andorra.

First held in 1991, it is Europe's major mid-distance stage race and attracts a wide international entry.

The winner of the first Pirena race was René Minartz, a Dutchman, who repeated his victory in 1993. Over the past 19 years, winners have come from Holland, France, USA, Canada, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Spain. Elizabeth Edland of Norway was the first lady to win the Pirena in 2001.
