New England
New England (the American states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island) together with the adjacent states of New York and Pennsylvania became a major centre of interest in sled dogs and dogsled sport in the late 1920s and has remained so ever since. The combined influence of
Leonhard Seppala and
Arthur Walden gave the sport a high profile initially, boosted by the addition of dogsled racing as a demonstration sport at the 1939 Winter Olympics in
Lake Placid, New York.
